Scholarships/Loans for Non-U.S. Citizen and Non-Permanent Resident (Not a Green Card Holder) ?!?!!?

Posted by admin on Sep 2, 2010

I’m a foreign citizen and I’m set my eyes to join this school in Washington (Green River Community College) for its FAA Approved Flight Courses. Although I would say that my intellect is not an issue but money is. It always has been, it’s the one thing that makes the world go ’round.

Anyways, I have been accepted to one of the top Flight University in the Nation (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University) and that really didn’t go anywhere since almost any organization that offers scholarships and affordable school loans has the requirement to have at least a Green Card. I don’t have one and I doubt that my family would get one in the mere future (at least 3-5 years).

It’s been a year that I’ve played softball with the local community college in the area and I’m really ready to move on and get my life started.

Is anyone here on the same boat as I am? Is anyone here has any recommendation for my dilemma? If so, I’m in desperate need of advice.

Thanks in advance.

How are you in the US? What is your visa - or do you not have one? If you’re here illegally, or don’t have certain types of visas, then you can’t get US financial aid or loans. However, some schools might be able to give you institutional financial aid. You’d need to talk to financial aid at each school to discuss your situation and see what, if anything, can be done.

But know that it’s pretty much the case that many schools expect foreign students, which you actually are, to be able to pay their own way.

I don’t know what country you’re a citizen of, but some countries offer low cost or even free college/university education to citizens. That may be something for you to look into.

Should I take the SAT and the ACT or just the SAT?

Posted by admin on Aug 23, 2010

I’m a junior from Washington and I am wondering if I should take the SAT and the ACT. I am currently signed up to take the SAT on June 5th at Green River Community College. I am going to apply and hopefully get into the University of Washington to complete my premed then go onto medical school.

I have 7 AP classes total and my GPA is 3.853, should I take both the SAT and ACT or just the SAT?

I’ve been researching ACT and SAT online for our son. If you haven’t yet, go to their websites and get the previews of the exams and see what suits you best so you achieve the best score possible without extra pressure.

I do know that SAT does require more writing, but if you’ve already mastered AP courses that shouldn’t matter (did you mean 7 classes or 7 college credits?). If you don’t have the college credits from the AP courses yet, find a school that gives them and take them again–you’ll save a lot on college expenses.

Both exams still rely on pencils (compared to colleges and businesses and professions that use keyboards!) if that matters.

As far as whether to take both exams, check with University of Washington admissions (on their website is easiest or call) and ask. Most colleges I have looked at don’t require both, but make sure U of W accepts the one you prefer. If you like taking exams, it won’t hurt–as long as one score doesn’t bring you down….

Look at act.org or collegeboard.com and look around. You will see sample tests etc to see what fits you best (you are the one that counts for the exam>>>then you meet the wonder and challenge of a medical education :-).

I want to help my school "go green" but..how?

Posted by admin on Jul 28, 2010

I’m 16 years old and see the constant waste that generates from everyday school life and want to know how I can help my school and community to go green.

call your local trash service (make sure you call the industrial brnahc for larger quantities of trash) and ask if they would donate a couple of recycling bins for your lunch room at school, or if they won’t,get a quote. remember that a school is tax exempt. after you have your figures, set up a meeting with your board of education, citing costs and possible ways to raise the money, ask your school’s key club to hold an event like a bake sale or something like that.’

more than likely, your school can take a chunk of it’s budget to afford the facilities you need. even if they don’t bite right away, they might reward your efforts and planning anyway. do anything you cxan, you know?

What will it take to get people passionate about stopping global warming again?

Posted by admin on Jul 8, 2010

It seems that the liberal and green community has gone into hiding over this. We carried the torch 2 years ago! I am the only one passionate about saving the planet? What were million of us saying 2 years ago? What has happened to hope and change?

Politically speaking…you got sold a 75 Chevy Vega with Obama.

Nice work…. " hope and change " ,,,you actually bought that line of BS ??

Where can I find information about recycling (plastic) in my community?

Posted by admin on Jun 18, 2010

This year, my high school started a club called Go Green, where we (obviously) try to make the school and community a greener place. One thing I’ve noticed is that the students in our school alone use a lot of plastic water bottles. I’m looking for a way to get students to recycle water bottles. I’d really like something simple, like a bin that can be filled with the bottles to be sorted later. I don’t want the students to be discouraged or turned off from recycling by something too complicated though. I live in a small town of about 6,000 people so there aren’t a lot of local options for recycling. Is there a company or organization online that provides a simple service like this?

Hello,

There are a couple of options you can look at:

Earth 911 is a site that lists local recycling options based on zip code. It may be worthwhile to look there and see if there are local plastic recycling companies.

The option about talking to your town is a good one. Many towns offer recycling services to schools. Usually it requires the school to initiate the service and they provide pickup, etc.

Another option is to check out a company called TerraCycle. They have a program open to some schools where they collect plastic bottles as a fundraiser. TerraCycle makes a vermicomposting fertilizer product that they botte.

Regarding the collection, an easy way to do this is to engage an art teacher and ask them to assign it as a class project. Utilizing the boxes that paper gets shipped to your school in, have the art students come up with creative ways to decorate the boxes and communicate the message. This also eliminates the need for you to purchase containers to collect bottles in. Finally when those containers get to the point of replacement, you can recycle them with the other cardboard generated by your school.

Hope this helps!
Adam

would I be able to go to community college with no green card?

Posted by admin on Jun 8, 2010

am 18 years old and a senior in high school with a 4.3 GPA but I have no papers. I came to the United States from Nicaragua when I was 8 years old and my parents had already lived here for two years and had a granted Temporary Protected Status because of Hurricane Mitch which happened in Nicaragua in 1998. They still have this protection and therefore have social security numbers and work authorizations. They both pay their taxes every year and work legally in the US. I also have my eight year old brother who was born here, the only person in my family who has absolutely no documentation is me. I have less than a month left in high school and I would LOVE to go to a state college but see that that is impossible at this moment since I can receive no scholarships or grants. My parents went to the bank and have applied for a loan so they can pay for my college but only a small amount could be lent to them and I would like to see if I can go to community college with no documentation. I would at least be able to go to school here and if there is no reform soon leave and be able to work anywhere in the world since I studied in the US

Yes, you can. They may make you pay out of state fees (depending where you are). You are paying your money so i don’t see why they would refuse you an education. Go apply and good luck.

If there were a massive "green jobs" program, wouldn’t most of the jobs go to red states?

Posted by admin on May 29, 2010

Alcohol production, wind power, solar power and vegetable oil—don’t they all come from red states? The only blue state activity might be aluminum can recycling. So why all the talk about urban "green job communities"?

No. Obama spends our money on his supporters…like the United Auto Workers. The ‘green jobs’ will go wherever there are Democrats.
